Although there are lots of places to visit in Fiji, here's my pick of the 5 places that you just can't afford to miss, while in Fiji :
Fiji Museum
The Fiji Museum is a great place to know about the culture and history of Fiji. Displayed in chronological order, the exhibits also document snippets from other cultures that have influenced Fiji. One can also get updates about archeological research in the quarterly journal Domodomo that showcases other things as well. These include culture, history, art; language etc and this journal can be procured from the museum’s gift shop. The last Saturday of each month is the most exciting time to visit the museum since one can enjoy some live music along with poetry and traditional dances. One can buy souvenirs from craft shops and relish traditional food.
Sigatoka Sand Dunes
Just near the Sigatoka River, are the splendid sand dunes of Fiji. These natural dunes have formed over a period of several years from the sediments brought by the Sigatoka River. The sand is dark brown in color and has lots of shrubs and vines.
Mana Island Day Cruise
Get ready for some fun and adventure at the beautiful Mana Island. You can reach Mana Island by boarding a luxury catamaran and view the crystal clear waters on the way. You can explore the reef and swim in the lagoon. If you’re game for water sports, you can snorkel, swim, and go jetskiing, parasailing, waterskiing, and wakeboarding. Tavuni Hill Fort
This 18th century, this fort is the most interesting historical spot of Fiji. Built by Tongan chief Maile Latumai, the Tavuni Hill Fort was used in the war times as a defensive site. One can easily survey the entire surrounding area from the fort. One can enjoy some spectacular views from the top of the valley. It is fairly easy to reach the fort as it is strategically located and is very near to the Naroro Village.
Mariamma Temple
Come here July-August and you can witness the extraordinary fire-walking ritual! Lasting for about 10 days, men display the South-Indian fire-walking as part of the annual religious festival and worship the Maha Devi Goddess. Fire-walking is performed by men from South India and it is a sacred ritual and it is believed to help the men attain self-acceptance. It is really a thrilling sight to see men walk on the burning coal. It is interesting to note that some cultures of Fiji also practice this ritual along with the Hindus.
